Essence of the Soul

Our 200 hour Hatha yoga training opens Essence of the Soul. This portion of our training is designed to help you create a personal spiritual practice that is built on authenticity, love and trust. This is the yogic way to physical health, mental clarity, and divine awareness.

History & Philosophy

The training will introduce you to yogic history and philosophy based on the 8 Fold Path of Raja Yoga. The philosophy is discussed as perspective from which to view the experiences of life. Studies will include an overview of the Bhagavad-Gita, the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, and their daily application for balanced living.

Anatomy & Physiology

The anatomy and physiology portion of our 200 hour teacher training will familiarize you with the fundamentals of the human body and its mechanics. We pay special attention to the interrelatedness of the systems within the body and will emphasize the key musculo-skeletal structures as they relate to asana. You will learn the benefits of hatha yoga including the indications and contraindications of postures. You will also explore yogic anatomy of the subtle bodies (chakras, nadis, bandhas).

Lifestyle & Ethics

Learning about yoga is more than postures. It is how you live yoga in your everyday life. Special emphasis is placed on creating space for self-transformation and self-empowerment. The training is based on the quote from the Bhagavad Gita “Yoga is the journey of the self, through the self, to the self.”

These studies of yogic guidelines provide the yoga teacher with a context and code of ethics, which supports both actual instructions as well as provides a touchstone for a business code of ethics.

Techniques, Practice & Integration

You will have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the asana experience as you learn to teach basic and intermediate asanas with verbal instructions, breath coordination, lines of energy, variations, props, modifications and assists. The practices of pranayama (science of breath), meditation, and chanting will be introduced to enrich you as well as provide you with the skill to lead these practices as they might relate to a yoga class. Classes are designed with lectures, workshops and practicums, which is your opportunity to practice leading asanas.

Teaching Methodology

Drawing on components covered in Techniques, Philosophy, Lifestyle and Ethics, and Anatomy and Physiology this module expands into the broader aspects of teaching a class. Included are learning different ways to lead a posture, designing a class, creating flow, creating a supportive environment for self and students, adjusting for a class’ specific needs, observing and staying connected with the class, and assisting/correcting.

You are encouraged to understand and develop your own unique gifts, style and voice as you consider the qualities of a teacher.

Business of Yoga

Teaching yoga as a profession must be approached as a business. The business of finding your niche, marketing, technology, safety, insurance, and legal considerations are discussed.

Seva & Homework

In the classical traditions of yoga seva, or service, is considered essential to the path of the yogi. You will select and perform some form of seva for the Soul community or for another organization and will journal your experience to share with your classmates

In order to receive the full benefit from the teachings of the Soul of Yoga Institute 200 hatha training, as well as meet Yoga Alliance’s 200 Hour Registered Yoga Teacher Training requirements, you will need to complete and hand in 20 hours of homework assignments. This homework prepares you to be able to do research and self-study on your own.

Practicum, Presentations & Exams

You will be required to student teach a total of 10 hours throughout your 200 hour yoga teacher training. The details are flexible and will be discussed during the course.

The Student Presentations and exam will be delivered at the end of your course and will also be further discussed in class.

Flossie has dedicated her life to empowering herself and others through yoga, meditations, workshops, retreats, Crystal Bowl sound therapy and numerous other modalities. She has been actively involved in the wellness field for over 25 years developing programs that reach out to all walks of life. For ten years Flossie owned a yoga studio on the east coast where she developed and directed a successful School of Yoga. Through her Yoga Teacher Training programs and certifications, she has lovingly guided hundreds of students to step into living their passions and enriching their lives and the lives of others with the experience, wisdom and love of yoga.

Monique has been teaching yoga for more than 13 years both in New York and California. She is the founder and Director of both the Advanced Yoga Teacher Training and Yoga Therapy programs at Soul of Yoga. She has a deep reverence for the beautiful miracle of the human body and loves teaching Anatomy and Physiology in 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training program.

Monique’s most profound teaching gifts lie in her ability to apply asana as a therapeutic tool for healing. She is especially intuitive with students who have movement restrictions or injuries and has helped many people move out of their pain and into the enjoyment of life again.

All of her classes, be they gentle or vinyasa flow, are designed to help your body feel better, be stronger and move more freely. She is a devoted student of Yogic Philosophy and delights in weaving the wisdom of the teachings into her classes so that it feels relevant, supportive and inspiring to her students through life’s challenges and joys.

Monique has more than 2000 hours of training; a dedicated student of some of the best therapeutic teachers in the field including Brian Dorfman, Leslie Kaminoff, Nischala Joy Devi and Mukunda Styles.

Her Teaching Style:

Leaning most closely towards the therapeutic philosophy of T.K.V Desikchar’s Viniyoga, Monique’s teaching style is ultimately a “yogic quilt” woven by all the varied and wonderful teachers she’s studied with and can best be described as a flowing breath-centered vinyasa married to anatomical alignment principles.

Erika Lee E-RYT 500, RMT

Erika Lee walked into her first Yoga class when she 18 years old, and her world was literally and figuratively flipped upside down! Through her years of practice, Erika felt her life transform in powerful and positive ways. She felt her life begin to shift not only in the physical realm by the healing of her chronic back pain, but also emotionally and spiritually. After over ten years of personal study and practice, Erika decided to share the healing power of Yoga and meditation with her loved ones and became a teacher in 2008. She holds several certifications and is currently a student of Soul of Yoga in Encinitas where she will soon earn her degree in their extensive Yoga Therapy program. She loves Yoga for countless reasons, however to her one of the most beautiful aspects of the practice is that it evolves with age and is available to students of any walk of life. In addition to her Yoga training Erika is also a Reiki Master and leads powerful Reiki circles and trainings. She is a philanthropist and donates a great deal of her time and teachings to benefit charities and local non-profit organizations. She has led several retreats around the world. Erika believes that Yoga is for everyone and strives to create a safe and sacred environment for her students to learn and transform. Let the journey begin… Namaste!

Hatha yoga entered Jack Greene’s life in 2007 as a relationship was ending. His intention was to get into better shape along with reconnecting to the inner peace that meditation offered as a child when he began his meditation practice at age 8. What he discovered was that Hatha yoga offered him so much more than becoming leaner, stronger, more flexible. It offered a way to digest life and to deepen the connection to his higher self. Yoga also helped cultivate a more conscious relationship with the breath and all of life. It truly works on everything.

Teaching yoga has been a blessing, however Jack considers himself more of a guide. He completed his 200hr training in April 2011 and Advanced 300hr training in 2013, both through the Soul of Yoga Institute in Encinitas. He is grateful to have studied Raja Yoga with Tom and Trisha Kelly, Viniyoga/Yoga Therapy with Monique Lonner, Brian Dorfman, Leslie Kaminoff, Nischala Joy Devi, and Iyengar Yoga with Roger Cole and others. Jack is also an HHP with over 1000 hours training in massage and holistic healing. He is honored to share his knowledge, experience, and love of yoga with his students and future teachers.

TomTom Kelly E-RYT 500

Tom Kelly spent 25 years as a monk deeply involved in meditation and humanitarian service. An inspirational speaker, workshop and retreat leader, Tom has traveled world-wide teaching the sacred art of Raja Yoga. Tom left the monastic life in 1999. He founded Soul of Yoga in 2001 with his wife, Trisha.

Trisha has lived the yogic lifestyle for 30 years. Trisha has studied with many notable teachers, including Erich Shiffmann, Gurumukh Kaur Khalsa, and Judith Lasater. Trisha’s continued love and study of metaphysics, sound, vibration, light and healing has brought her certification in many modalities including Soul Memory Discovery. She is a Reiki Master.

Born in Italy and raised in France, Chiara was introduced to yoga in Hawaii in 2000 by her mentor. Through this mentor-ship she developed a love for Yoga, awakening the deep intelligence within her own body and spine. She taught and learned at the Salon Des Arts for the next 10 years focusing on posture correction through alignment, deep tissue strengthening and nervous system balancing. She then went on to San Diego and continued her education through the Soul of Yoga for her 200 and 500-hour certification. Mindful breathing, connecting to the heart, and alignment are all consistent points of focus in her class. Also studying Sacred Sound, Metaphysics, Astrology and Ayurveda she infuses these teachings in her class.

Chiara’s teaching style is intuitive reminding us of the interconnectedness of all of life. The practice is a loving prayer, a ritual to dive deeper into the body and awaken inner wisdom.

She loves helping people remember their Souls journey and connect to their spirits through a peaceful, mindful and sometimes challenging practice.

She currently teaches Restorative, Yin, Prenatal, Vinyasa, children’s yoga, Hatha Her passion is also in leading ceremonies, blessing ways and space clearing.
